The Wine Ran Out

“I do!!”   “I do!!

We promise

to love each other

until the end of time.

And to insure

The keeping of those  promises

we plan to do

these seven simple things:

to use the names we were given at our birth,

or the ones we discovered in the unfolding of our love,

and never  “him” or “her”

 when we are but an arm’s length away.

to look at each other when we speak

for eyes say

more  than

words can ever  say;

to listen carefully

when we speak

for words get richer

with experience;

to share our feelings

with notes in ink

to be put between the pages of a book,

or in a tiny silver box;

to find a hilltop

this time each year

and review together

the memories we have made;

to dance

in a crowded room

and feel

that no one else is there,

to build memorials to our sacred times

with red and yellow roses

or the touch of finger tips

across a table top.

We promise to

love tenderly

for it is our life’s gift

to each other,

and it is

the greatest gift

we can give to  those

who are given unto us.

If at times

we lose sight of this

we’ll remember Cana

and the day the wine ran out,

and how Jesus touched the

water in

the jars

the stewards brought

and wine,

deep red,

flowed tastier

than before.

He was there

as a blessing to their love

and is here

as a blessing to ours.

We’ll ask him

to keep an eye

on things,

and if the wine is running low,

to step right up,

touch us on the shoulder,

and remind us of

the promises we made,

and of the seven simple ways

we planned to use

to insure

the fulfillment of our promises.
