Minutes of Parish Council Meeting

February  11,  2009


President Paul Travers called the meeting to order at 7:40 pm.  Members in attendance were Teresa McGrath, Marilyn McGoldrick, Joan McGauley, Bette Marafino.  Ex-officio members- Fr. Cody, Pat Piano, Pat Pruitt, Cici Baker.

 

The minutes of the January 14, 2009 meeting were approved with one correction.The $135,171.00 received for the Annual Appeal was not specifically for the boiler.

 

C O M M I T T E E    R E P O R T S

 

CCD/YOUTH GROUP:  Jayne O’Donnell reported that this is a “quiet time of the year” for CCD.  All classes are moving along smoothly.  Viewing of the Archbishop’s Annual Appeal CCD and discussion of the needs of less fortunate people have prompted the children to hold a prayer-a-thon to raise money for the marginalized.  The first Prime Time Kids Mass of the New Year was held.  A special thanks is given to Nellie Agostino for sharing her wisdom with one of the fifth grade classes as they are learning about the interior of the church.

Bobbi Moran reported that Grades 6-10 continue to move forward.  The 10th grade will be on retreat from Feb.28 - March 1st.  Confirmation is in May. Several students are rehearsing music for the Confirmation Mass.  Marie Callahan will be asked to assist in the music preparation.  Bobbi and Pat Piano will meet soon with the musicians to review the Confirmation mass.

Students in grades 6 - 9 will help with Hospitality Sunday on March 1st. 

The Mass of Election will be held on a Sunday in March.

Bobbi Moran will be reviewing the religious education program for next year, changing the Focus to Faith Formation, which is an ongoing process.  Parents will be required to attend a portion of the classes next year.  Bobbi will work on the program this summer with implementation in the Fall.  Registration materials this April will reflect this change and have listed dates for parents.

Father Cody asked if  a Parent’s Advisory Board has gotten underway yet.  This will be looked into

 

LITURGY:  Pat Piano reported the committee met on February 3rd.  A letter was sent to all parish members with times of Lenten/Holy Week Services and opportunities for adult education.  On Sunday, February 8th the first Mass for  the Deaf was held. Julie Colbert signed the Mass.  This will be continued on the 2nd Sunday of each month at the 10:30 Mass.  Space will be reserved in the front pews for our deaf friends.

RCIA-The Rite of Election will be celebrated on the first Sunday of Lent at the 10:30 Mass.  The Scrutiny Rites will be celebrated on the 3rd, 4th, and 5th Sundays of Lent.

The large wood processional cross will be used during Lent.  Each liturgy will begin with a focus prayer crafted from the readings and symbolized by a colored band  that will be placed on the cross.  Parish members will be asked to participate in carrying the band of color.

 

ENVIRONMENT:  The committee met on Sunday, February 8th.  The 50th Anniversary Banner is up in the back of the church and will be taken down soon to be pressed.

Stan and Mickey Bartus, on the occasion of their 50th   Anniversary have gifted the church

with money  to purchase new processional candles which will match the existing candles on the altar. Preparations are being made for Easter and the church will be prepared for Lent on February 24th, the day before Ash Wednesday.

 

ADULT EDUCATION:  On February 10th, Deacon Arthur Miller gave our first Adult Education presentation.  This presentation was about our black brothers and sisters in Hartford   The next Adult Education presentation will be a forum on the three Abrahamic   religions.   A complete outline of Adult Education offerings for 2009 will be in the Sunday Bulletin on February 14th and 15th.

 

STEWARDSHIP/EVANGELIZATION: The committee is planning for a Ministry Fair this spring.  The Welcome Cart, which is used on Hospitality Sunday, is still missing.

 

PASTORAL CARE: The pastoral care team will meet on Tuesday, February 17th for its winter meeting.  The committee will prepare for the Lenten/Easter season as they continue to move among the sick, frail and homebound of our community.

 

FACILITIES:  No report.  Prior to the Council meeting, there was a tour to look at and ask questions about the new furnace.

 

COMMUNITY OUTREACH:  Mary Ruddat submitted a report that the next committee meeting is February 24th and all are welcome.  The next drive will be in March - the Easter basket drive for Gifts of Love.  It was reported that the socks, underwear drive was a great success with approximately 2,000 items collected..  The items were sent to Sand,. Clark and McDonough schools and the Rescue Mission.

 

FINANCE:  No report.

 

PARISH LIFE/SOCIAL:  Dave Moran submitted a report that the Knights of Columbus has helped with Hospitality Sunday.  No specific details on the proposed Spaghetti dinner.

 

SCHOOL BOARD:  Marilyn McGoldrick reported that the School Board minutes are not yet available.  She spoke about the upcoming Science and History Fair in which students will be taking part.

 

COMMENTS:  Paul Travers mentioned that Justin Gilhooly will attend the next Council meeting to discuss some safety issues.
