Minutes of Parish Council Meeting

May  20,  2009

 

President Paul Travers called the meeting to order at 7:35 pm.  Members in attendance were Ned Wentworth, Marilyn McGoldrick, Bette Marafino. Ex-officio Pat Pruitt, Pat Piano, Jayne O’Donnell, Cici Baker.  Guest: Justin Gilhooly.  Justin took the Council on a tour of the church facility noting heating and air conditioning settings, concrete sidewalk and other items that need attention.  A suggestion to put appropriate signage on the gate near the trash area will be implemented.  There not being a quorum, the minutes of the April 8, 2009, council meeting will not be approved until the June council meeting.  Pat Piano led the Council in a prayer by Joyce Rupp- “Come Holy Spirit”

 

C O M M I T T E E   R E P O R T S

 

CCD/YOUTH GROUPS:  Jayne O’Donnell reported that forty-three children received their first communion.  Registration notices for the Fall CCD instruction were sent out and parents have until June 26th to register their children.  Many CCD teachers will be returning.

Bobbi Moran reported that the 6-10th grade religious education classes ended in April and thirty-five young men and women were confirmed on May 3rd by Bishop Peter A. Rosazza.  Four students played an instrumental Communion Meditation.  Thanks to Fr. Cody, Pat Piano, Pat Pruitt , Nelli Agostino, Ron Rothermel, Marie Callahan and the St. Timothy’s Folk Group for their help to make the Mass a beautiful event.  The 9th grade families hosted a reception after the Mass.

Registration for the 2009-2010 school year took place on April 26th.  Currently Bobbi is reviewing the registrations and securing teachers for next year.  There is also a search for a new person available to teach the confirmation program.

 

Pat Piano submitted a reported on the following committees:

LITURGY:  The committee met on May 5th and reviewed the Holy Week Rites.  For the Feast of the Pentecost there will be a reading of the Sequence in three different languages. On June 7th at the 10:30 Mass there will be the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick.  The second Sunday of each month is signed for the Deaf Community.

RCIA:  On May 17th at the 8:30 Mass, the Rite of Acceptance into the Catechumenate was held for two young women catechumens, Rayissa Armata and Haydria Bish.  Their sponsors are Karen Tyler and Mary Rose Verdile.

ENVIRONMENT:  The committee met on May 10th and reviewed our celebration of Holy Week and Easter Season.  A celebration of the feast of Pentecost will have flowers arranged by Regina Neal.

ADULT EDUCATION:  On May 12th, Dr. Mark Mitchell from the Connecticut Coalition for Environmental Justice presented the issues that plague the Hartford area, especially its children..  Jeannie Graufstein from the Office of Urban Affairs spoke to the Catholic Moral Imperative: Why we should care.

STEWARDSHIP/EVANGELIZATION:  The Spirit of St. Timothy Weekend will be held on May 30/31st.  Prior to this event, two weeks of witness by those involved in parish life will be presented at the end of Masses.

PASTORAL CARE MINISTRY:  The team met on May 19th.  The ministry needs to be expanded to Hartford Hospital.  More willing Eucharistic Ministers are needed to call upon folks.

 

PARISH LIFE/SOCIAL COMMITTEE:  No report.  It was discussed that in addition to once-a-month Hospitality Sunday, we might want to have a wine/cheese hospitality once-a-month after the Saturday afternoon mass.

 

COMMUNITY OUTREACH:  No report.

 

SCHOOL BOARD:  Marilyn McGoldrick reported that the Saint Timothy Middle School (STMS) Board discussed the following items at its April meeting:

  1. The 8th grade Soup Bowls project raised $400.00 for an area soup kitchen.  Over 500 people attended the Pasta Dinner, which helped reduce the cost of the 8th grade trip to New York City.  Upcoming events include the Honors Breakfast.  The Office of Catholic Schools (OCS) commended STMS for continued overall high scores on the standardized testing.  The CAP meeting through the OCS will provide a way to develop alumni profiles and update the database.  Future meetings will have a guest speaker on autism and meetings on how to maximize the use of our website.  The Night of the Arts is May 14th and graduation is June 5th.  There will be a future meeting with the town of West Hartford for some additional funding.  There are hopes to secure a part-time Language Arts assistant as well as a part-time social worker to be shared with other Catholic schools. 
  2. Enrollment for 2009/10 is 140 students.  New board members are expected.
  3. Tiger Ball donations are down.
  4. The final Board meeting of the school year is May 19th.

NEW BUSINESS:  Paul Travers noted that on Good Friday, Tom Policelli repaired some of the kneelers in church.  Many thanks to Tom for his good work.

Nominations:  There are two vacancies on the Parish Council and the elections for these two slots will be on May 30th/31st.  Thank you to Dave Moran and Joan McGauley for their service on the Council.
